A Little About Toquerville

Toquerville is named after Chief Toquer, an early Paiute chief and was first settled in the spring of 1858 when several families built log cabins near Chief Toquer's Paiute village along Ash Creek. In 1859 nineteen families were living in Toquerville and by 1864 the community had grown to forty-one families.

A Short History of Toquerville

In a letter written by John D. Lee to Willard Richards on August 7, 1852 and published in the Deseret News on November 4, 1852, comes the following quote: "A few days ago we had a visit from the Toquer Indian Captain with about 30 of his warriors, who wished to hold a council with us upon the subjects of forming a settlement in their country. They met us with the warmest of Indian friendship. Chief Toquer asked that the Saints settle there and teach his Toquits (or Toquerates) to work like the white man."

The Climate

General Information About the Climate

Toquerville is located in the upper reaches of the Mohave desert and has a typical "high desert" climate. Summers are hot and dry, with daytime temperatures reaching 105 degrees, cooling to about 65 to 70 degrees at night. Winters are considered mild, with night time temperatures averaging about 30 degrees, occasionally dipping to the teens, and days in the upper 50's to 60's.
